The treatment of primary hepatic malignancy with total hepatectomy and liver transplantation remains a controversial issue. In the past liver transplantation has been attempted for all the different types of primary and metastatic tumor of the liver with the rationale that the removal of the entire organ in the absence of extrahepatic metastatic disease would have offered the best possible survival. It has since become clear that several factors play a role in the survival of these patients, some of which are still poorly understood.
