Abstract
At present liver transplantation has become a routine treatment in patients with progressive hepatic failure and fulminant hepatitis [1, 7]. It has been largely due to improvement in aenesthesia, immunosuppressive therapy, storage of harvested organs and development of surgical techniques. The latter have changed little since the first classical liver transplantation described by Starzl in 1969 [31]. The transplantation technique has become more efficient owing to the introduction of the extracorporeal pumpdriven system providing a temporary venous circulation (venous bypass) as well as progress in vascular and biliary tract surgery [18,37].
