Abstract

Extensive progress in transplantation science and practice have caused organ transplantation to become available for a great number of patients in most countries around the world. The results of such treatment are constantly improving and five-year patient survival with functioning kidney or liver graft is close to 85%. This has been possible due to achievements in immunology, genetics, recognition of the importance of ischemia-reperfusion injury, implementation of new immunosuppressive regimens, improved patient management, early diagnosis and treatment of complications.
