The standard technique of orthotopic liver transplantation involves the resection of the liver along with the retrohepatic part of the recipient's inferior vena cava (IVC). Caval occlusion reduces the venous blood return causing a reduction in cardiac output, increases IVC pressure and decreases renal perfusion pressure.
