Orthotopic Liver Transplantation with Vena Cava Preservation and Suprahepatic Caval Anastomosis

Abstract
The standard technique of orthotopic liver transplantation involves the resection of the liver along with the retrohepatic part of the recipient's inferior vena cava (IVC). Caval occlusion reduces the venous blood return causing a reduction in cardiac output, increases IVC pressure and decreases renal perfusion pressure. The use of the venous bypass has helped to overcome hemodynamic instability and to avoid renal and splanchnicvenous congestion when occluding the IVe.
