I am proud to write the Introduction to this special issue of the Annals of Transplantation dedicated to lung transplantation, and I would like to thank Drs. Wojtek Rowinski and Mark Hardy for conceivingand encouraging this effort. Although lung transplantation has become increasingly accepted as a therapeutic intervention for severe end-stage cardiopulmonary disease, it is apparent that results after lung transplantation are not as successful as those reported for other solid organ allografts
