There is a plethora of clinical observations on the fate of organ transplants and the response of the recipient. These very useful data prompt us to study basic mechanisms underlying the processes proceeding in transplants and their hosts. The progress in molecular methods for identification of physiological and pathological events in tissues and cells provides insight into so far unexpected events In this issue we review new approaches to detection of innate immune reaction to allografts, detection of microbial substances in grafts responsible for reactions often attributed to allogeneic rejection, preservation of graft cells using natural cytoprotective substances and present some of our findings.
