Abstract
Successful transplantation of the kidney between the identical twins performed byJoseph Murray and his colleagues in the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston in December 1954 and soon after by the group of associates of Jean Hamburger in Hospital Necker in Paris opened the new era of medicine. The following 40 years have brought the development of a new branch of science - transplantology and a new medical specialty - the transplantation medicine. During these years organ transplantation has moved from the unique surgical procedure, available to few selected patients, which was considered as the clinical experiment, to a widely practiced, clinically proven, method of treatment which saves the lives of hundreds thousands patients around the world. The criteria of death have undergone transformation from the cardiac death through the brain death to the brain stem death. Multiorgan procurement techniques have replaced simple excision of the kidneys for transplantation.
