Abstract
Background: Living related liver transplantation for paediatric patients has
become an acceptable, low risk treatment option. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of the donor's liver regeneration.
Material/Methods: Between October 1999 and January 2008 120 living related donors were operated on and 109 grafts consisting of II, III segments and 11 grafts consisting of II, III and IV segments were harvested. Volumetric assessment of the donor's liver and selected segments was performed using computed tomography. After procurement every graft was weighed. Seven and 30 days, and 12 months after the operation donor's liver remnant was evaluated for differences in volume.
Results: Significant correlation between liver graft mass and its volume assessed with computed tomography was found (r=0.781; p<0.05). Twelve months after procurement average regeneration index was significantly higher in donors of segments II, III, IV (139.11±22.88%) versus donors of segments II and III (108.83±17.25%) (p<0.05). Conclusions: Liver regeneration after procurement of selected liver segments from the living donors is a consistent finding and computed tomography is an accurate imaging modality to track changes in liver volume. This study shows positive correlation between the size of liver graft and regeneration of liver remnant in the donor
